A Case Study of Spatial Diversification of Pastoral Sheep Holdings AgEcon
Anderson, Jock R..
Those familiar with the extensive wool growing industry of Australia generally recognize the importance of spatial diversification of pastoral sheep holdings but to this time, data have not been assembled to quantify this importance. This case study based on the sheep and wool industry of central western Queensland goes some way towards filling this gap in knowledge by detailing the extent and nature of spatial diversification of multiple holdings in a survey of 145 sheep holdings.

A catalogue of the species of the genus Lomaptera (Coleoptera, Cetoniidae) in the Leiden and Amsterdam Musea Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
After Mr. F. T. Valck Lucassen's decease in september 1939 his collections have been transported to the Leiden Museum for better preservation. In 1941 the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, could acquire these considerable collections which also included those of Janson (London) and Girard (Geneva). These collections contain a great number of species, often represented by the types or series of types, many of which described by Valck Lucassen himself. In an obituary Uyttenboogaart (1940: 1-2) gave an enumeration of all papers by Valck Lucassen, most of which are on Cetonids. The monograph on the genus Lomaptera, announced by Uyttenboogaart, had to be translated, illustrated and to be made ready for printing; it was published in 1961 by the...

A comparative study of Plecotus auritus and P. austriacus (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae) inhabiting one roost Naturalis
Stebbings, R.E..
This study began in November, 1960 and involved studies of all bats living within one large and complex roof. Furzebrook House, built in 1885, was of brick with hollow walls and a black slate roof. The roof consisted of 9 distinct sections comprising some 385 m³ of which 60 % was accessible for searching. Eight species were caught in these accessible regions and because Plecotus spp. were the most numerous, they became the chief study. The study became more significant when Plecotus austriacus (Fischer) (first described by Bauer, 1960), was identified in the roof. Detailed descriptions of the two English Plecotus have already been published (cf. Stebbings, 1967). The aim of this report is to present evidence that might suggest reasons for the distribution...

A contribution to the knowledge of non-marine Mollusca of South West Africa Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
The moment to collate scattered notes on South West African non-marine molluscs arrived last year when Mr. B. H. Lamoral of the Natal Museum, Pietermaritzburg (South Africa), entrusted the present author with the study of material obtained during a Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (C.S.I.R., Pretoria)-sponsored collecting trip. During Mr. Lamoral's explorations in 1969 in South West Africa non-marine molluscs were obtained as a sideline. Nevertheless the material is certainly considered sufficiently interesting to warrant publication. South West African material from various sources was studied and the following abbreviations have been used: BM for British Museum (Natural History), London; NM for Natal Museum, Pietermaritzburg; RMNH for...

A contribution to the wood anatomy of the Cinchoneae, Coptosapelteae and Naucleeae (Rubiaceae) Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, Jifke.
Wood samples of a number of Cinchoneae and Naucleeae sensu Schumann were studied, and the results compared with data found in the literature. On the whole the representatives of the Cinchoneae appeared to show a rather high degree of similarity among each other with the exception, however, of the genera Coutarea, Exostemma, Corynanthe, Crossopteryx, and Hymenodictyon. The creation of the tribe Coptosapelteae and its inclusion in the Ixoroideae seem to be corroborated by the particular character of the wood anatomy. The restriction of the Naucleeae to Nauclea L. ( Sarcocephalus Afzel.) is not supported by the anatomy of the wood.

A GRAPHICAL ILLUSTRATION OF THE DULOY PARADOX AgEcon
Powell, Alan A..
As a guide to the reorganisation of resources, the MVP /MFC comparison can result in the adjustment of resources to new levels which are actually further away from their optimal levels than their original values. Duloy illustrated this paradox mathematically in the context of fitted agricultural production functions in a paper published in 1959. His result is of considerable importance to agricultural micro-economists; however, it is not easy to teach to students of poor mathematical background. The need to be able to teach in literary form the Duloy Paradox--that increasing the application of a factor with a relatively high MVP can result in a movement away from the optimum input-mix--led to the following analysis.

A Middle Devonian atrypid brachiopod fauna from the Cantabrian Mountains, northwestern Spain, and its stratigraphic significance Naturalis
Struve, W.; Mohanti, M..
This paper records for the first time a rich atrypid brachiopod fauna from the Middle Devonian of the Cantabrian Mountains, Spain. A comparison of the Spanish atrypid fauna with that of Germany reveals a close similarity between the two. Even though the species are not identical, yet a comparison and stratigraphic evaluation has been made on the basis of external shape of the shells, ornamentation, etc. It is believed that the development of the Spanish species has been endemic or that the Spanish Middle Devonian sea was supplied with species immigrating from some place other than central Europe. On the basis of the distinct recession of Atrypa and the first appearance of the coarse ribbed species of Spinatrypa (Spinatrypa) a tentative Eifelian/Givetian...

A MODEL FOR THE ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF WATER QUALITY IN IRRIGATION AgEcon
Yaron, Dan; Bresler, E..
A model for determination of the efficient combination of water quantity and quality (salinity) in irrigation is presented. The efficient combination is evaluated with respect to a predetermined threshold salt concentration in the soil solution. A leaching model, designed for tracing salt distribution in the soil profile, serves as the basis for the analysis. The optimal quantity-quality combinations are derived with the aid of a linear programming model. An illustrative application of the model concludes the presentation.

A new genus and species in Velocipedidae (Heteroptera) Naturalis
Doesburg Jr., P.H. van.
Dedicated to Dr. H. C. Blöte on the occasion of his 70th birthday. In the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden, the author found a peculiar and most interesting specimen belonging to the Heteropterous family Velocipedidae. It appears to be quite different from the representatives of Scotomedes Stål, 1873, the only genus hitherto known is this family. The specimen is not in a very good state of preservation, but complete enough to serve as the basis for the following description. Bloeteomedes nov. gen. Typus: Β. borneensis nov. spec. Distinguishable from Scotomedes by the following characters: head longer, more cylindrical, underside without a median keel; first antennal segment extending far beyond apex of head, its length more...

A new ostracod (Entocytheridae, Notocytherinae) on New Guinea crayfish1) Naturalis
Hart, D.G.; Hart, C.W..
In 1967 we examined the crayfish collections in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, to determine if the crayfishes collected in New Guinea in 1954 by Dr. L. B. Holthuis, Dr. L. D. Brongersma, and Dr. M. Boeseman (Boeseman, 1963) were hosts to commensal ostracods. Of the collections examined, only the first contained ostracods. Forty-nine specimens were obtained from that collection, and are here described as a new genus and species belonging to the subfamily Notocytherinae. Elachistocythere gen. nov. Diagnosis. — A genus of the entocytherid subfamily Notocytherinae. Antennule with six podomeres. Dorsal antennal claw subspiculiform and devoid of setae. Mandibular protopodite with distal row of five teeth. Peniferum bifid. Penis straight,...

A new species of Polycyathus Duncan, 1876 from New Caledonia and a new record of Polycyathus senegalensis Chevalier, 1966 (Madreporaria) Naturalis
Wijsman-Best, Maya.
A new species of Madreporaria, Polycyathus fulvus, is described from New Caledonia. Zooxanthellae have been found symbiotic in its polyps, although the genus is ahermatypic. Another Polycyathus, P. senegalensis Chevalier, 1966, is recorded from the Caribbean area; it was previously known from the eastern tropical Atlantic only. These two records extend the known range of the genus and show it to have a circumequatorial distribution in warm and warm-temperate waters.

A new Species of Spadella (Benthic Chaetognatha) Naturalis
Alvariño, Angeles.
According to the literature, the genus Spadella Langerhans includes several species, Sp. cephaloptera (Busch) 1851, Sp. schizoptera Conant 1895, Sp. moretonensis Johnston & Taylor 1919, Sp. sheardi Mawson 1944, Sp. johnstoni Mawson 1944, Sp. angulata Tokioka 1951, Sp. nana Owre 1963, Sp. pulchella Owre 1963. This genus apparently includes species having world wide distributions, and species with distribution restricted to small regions. At times, several species have been reported from the same geographical region. For instance, MAWSON (1944) observed Sp. cephaloptera, Sp. sheardi, and Sp. johnstoni off the coasts of New South Wales (from off Post Heaking to off Ulladulla). OWRE (1963) observed Sp. schizoptera and Sp. nana at Soldier Key (Florida), and...
